All Highland Music Curriculum is Aligned to the State Standards
6th Grade General Music
In this six-week exploratory course, all sixth graders will take a musical trip around the world to experience the sights and sounds of the people living there. This music class provides students the opportunity to learn about a wide variety of musical elements, composers, and instruments. Students will appreciate and understand music from a variety of time periods and cultures. Students will understand the musical elements utilized by composers and performance musicians to convey their works. In addition, students will consider the relationship between music of the past and present.
7th Grade General Music
In this six-week exploratory course, all seventh graders will apply their knowledge of elements, composers, and instruments to real world musical experiences such as guitar, drumming, and piano. Students will understand the musical elements utilized by composers and musicians while they collaborate to perform and create new music.
8th Grade Musical Theater
Students will learn musical performance skills, singing techniques, movement for the stage and techniques for auditioning for a musical. The class will take an after school field trip to Libertyville High School to see a dress rehearsal of the fall musical production. For their final project, students will demonstrate their knowledge of these skills by performing a scene in a class musical for an invited audience. This class is a co-taught class. NO PRIOR EXPERIENCE NEEDED!
Highland ALOUD
Be heard in Highland ALOUD! This class will teach and reinforce the fundamentals of singing and musicianship in a large group, and no prior singing experience is needed! So whether you are a proud beginner, an experienced singer, or you are adventurous and looking to try something new, this choir class is for you! All students in this class will learn to sing in a large group setting, and there will be opportunities for small groups and solos for those interested.
There are two after school commitments which students are strongly encouraged to attend: the Organization Contest and the Highland Choir Concert in March. Any student with questions about Highland ALOUD should see Ms. Roeser!
8th Grade Beginning Guitar
Ever wanted to learn to play the guitar? Here is your chance! This class will teach you about the guitar including how to read and play musical notation, chords, and tablature. Students will be able to pick pop, rock, and country songs to learn and practice chord progressions and strumming patterns. This class is designed for beginners, although advanced players are also welcome!
8th Grade Music Industry
Music Industry explores the various skills required in today’s music industry from: recording to performing to business strategies. Students will learn at least three different musical skills, including Guitar, Keyboard, and Drums, in addition to Music Editing, Mixing, and Mastering. In Music Industry, we work with the combination of technology and music, so if you’re interested in doing some more Music Tech, then this is your place! Students will be assigned to one or more of the following roles: Sound Engineers, Musicians, Artists, Composers, and Producers. You do NOT need prior experience playing an instrument to join this class, but you DO need to be creative, innovative, and show initiative!
